Pavilhão 31 Gallery – P28, Júlio de Matos Hospital
Within the grounds of Júlio de Matos Hospital, in Alvalade, Pavilhão 31 houses the gallery and studio of P28 – Associação de Desenvolvimento Criativo e Artístico, a non-profit cultural association that brings contemporary art closer to the world of mental health. The association grew out of the cultural use of empty buildings in the former Lisbon Health Park and takes its name from Pavilion 28, where it first held exhibitions; since 2012 it has had, on loan from the Lisbon Psychiatric Hospital Centre, a space in Pavilion 31 with 300 m² of exhibition area. The gallery describes itself as the only project gallery in the country that pairs professional artists with resident artists from a studio within a mental-health unit: each of its five or six exhibitions a year always includes at least one artist from the P28 studio, in dialogue with emerging or established names. Jeff Koons, Emir Kusturica, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Jorge Molder, Eduardo Souto de Moura and Miguel Palma have all taken part, and previously unknown artists such as Artur Moreira, Francisco Gromicho and Anabela Soares have made their names here. The Residências programme also shows work by students from art schools such as the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and Ar.Co. Admission is free, through the gate on Rua das Murtas.
