PLMJ Foundation – Art Collection
The PLMJ Foundation grew out of the art collection begun in 2001 by the law firm PLMJ, when its move to new headquarters on Avenida da Liberdade was marked by the exhibition 'Uma Visão sobre os Anos 80-90' (A View of the 1980s and 1990s). Since then the collection has grown to more than 1,400 works by over 500 artists, spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation and video and united by one constant criterion: artists from Portuguese-speaking countries acquired when they were taking their first steps in their careers. The photography holdings are now perhaps the most significant, and the video holdings among the most interesting. Regarded as a benchmark among corporate collections, it received the ARCO Madrid 'A' collecting award in 2024, in the international corporate collection category. Most of the works are displayed in the common areas and offices of PLMJ on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo, which also houses a permanent gallery with annual group exhibitions of works from the collection and new acquisitions, and an auditorium for talks, launches and other events. The foundation also keeps a library of artists' books and catalogues and supports artist residencies. Visits are by prior appointment only and, whenever possible, are guided by the curator or by invited artists.
