Leal Rios Foundation – contemporary art collection

The Leal Rios Foundation is a private institution set up to share, preserve and promote the contemporary art collection that the brothers Manuel and Miguel Leal Rios began to assemble in 2002. It occupies a former car workshop in Alvalade, in an industrial area dating from the 1940s and 1950s, restored by the architect Alexandre Marques Pereira from an idea by Miguel Leal Rios; with more than 1,000 m², the building houses an exhibition gallery, a video room, small storerooms, an office and a library. The first exhibition, "Stele" by Francisco Tropa, opened on 24 March 2012. The collection, presented through temporary exhibitions, talks and workshops, includes significant groups of works by Helena Almeida, Lourdes Castro and Julião Sarmento and by foreign artists such as Erwin Wurm, Matt Mullican, Cristina Iglesias, Lawrence Weiner and Becky Beasley, with particular attention to video, installation and time-based media. In 2021 an agreement with the Serralves Foundation placed 287 works from the collection on deposit in the Porto museum's collection. Alongside the main exhibitions, the Project Room programme presents young guest artists. It opens from Wednesday to Saturday, in the afternoon; group visits and guided tours with the artist are arranged in advance.
