Carmona e Costa Foundation – Edifício de Espanha
Established on 24 July 1997 by Vítor and Maria da Graça Carmona e Costa, the foundation has its headquarters on the sixth floor of the Edifício de Espanha, on Rua Soeiro Pereira Gomes, and is devoted above all to Portuguese contemporary art. The contemporary art space, designed by the architect Gonçalo Fonseca in 2004-2005, has some 400 m² across four rooms and opened in 2005 with the exhibition "Da Escrita à Figura. Desenhos da Colecção de Serralves". Since then it has held regular exhibitions centred on drawing, understood as a practice that runs through every discipline, alternating projects by emerging artists, unseen work by established or underrated artists and works on paper from public and private collections. In the same premises, the decorative arts space, designed by the architect Luís Serpa, has displayed since October 2000 part of the collection gathered by the founders: Chinese export porcelain from the early 16th century onwards, notably a ewer from the Zhengde period, and Portuguese faience rich in rare pieces. The foundation also runs a publishing programme and grants, such as the Fulbright grant for a master's degree in drawing and an annual grant for a student at Ar.Co. Exhibitions open only from Wednesday to Saturday, in the afternoon, except on public holidays; the decorative arts space can be visited by appointment.
