Museu do Oriente

The Museu do Oriente, run by the Fundação Oriente, stands on the Alcântara waterfront in a building that is itself a piece of history: the former Pedro Álvares Cabral Building, a cold store for salt cod built in the early 1940s, monumental in style and decorated with bas-reliefs by the sculptor Barata Feyo, an example of Estado Novo architecture. Converted by the studio of João Luís Carrilho da Graça, it opened as a museum in 2008. The Fundação Oriente, set up in 1988 on the initiative of the Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau, is devoted to relations between Portugal and Asia, and the museum brings together two major collections. The Portuguese Presence in Asia, with more than 3,400 objects, tells five centuries of encounters, trade and artistic exchange, from Goa to Macau and Japan. The Kwok On Collection, donated to the Foundation in 1999, gathers more than 15,000 pieces of Asian performing arts – masks, puppets, costumes and instruments from China, India, Indonesia and Japan. Temporary exhibitions, performances and a restaurant overlooking the Tagus complete the visit.
