Almada Negreiros Murals Interpretation Centre – Alcântara Maritime Station

Opened in April 2025 on the ground floor of the Alcântara Maritime Station, the Almada Negreiros Murals Interpretation Centre is devoted to the mural paintings Almada Negreiros made for two maritime stations designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and built in the 1940s, at Alcântara and at Rocha do Conde de Óbidos, some 800 metres apart. Promoted by Lisbon City Council, the Port of Lisbon Authority and the Lisbon Tourism Association, with its concept and scientific coordination by Mariana Pinto dos Santos, the route through nine rooms tells the story of the paintings and the context in which they were made, the artist's work across the city and the memory of those who departed and arrived there in the second half of the twentieth century. At Alcântara, completed in 1943, the eight panels painted by 1945 combine popular mythology, such as the Nau Catrineta and the legend of D. Fuas Roupinho, with a portrait of riverside Lisbon and the toil of the women coal carriers. At Rocha do Conde de Óbidos, painted between 1946 and 1949, more geometric figures make up the triptychs Departure of Emigrants and Lisbon Sunday, subjects so at odds with the image the regime wished to project that the panels came close to being destroyed. Owing to works inside the building, the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos panels are temporarily closed to visitors.
