Jewish Cultural Centre Rua da Judiaria – Judiaria de Lisboa
On Rua da Judiaria, in Alfama, the Jewish Cultural Centre – Judiaria de Lisboa was founded in 2019 by Luciano Waldman to safeguard, enhance and share the tangible and intangible Portuguese-Jewish heritage. The choice of headquarters is no accident: according to the centre itself, this street is the last surviving medieval Jewish site in Lisbon. After the Christian conquest of 1147, separate quarters for Jews and Muslims were established in the city, and between 1147 and 1498 there were four Jewish quarters – the Pedreira, the Pequena, the Grande and the Alfama quarters, the last of which was created around 1373-1374. Following the expulsion and forced conversion of the Jews, synagogues became churches and houses were handed over to the Church and the nobility; the 1755 earthquake and the rebuilding that followed almost entirely erased the layout of the old Jewish quarters. The centre runs specialised guided tours, historical research, temporary exhibitions and educational and intercultural programmes, and is responsible for the Stolpersteine Portugal project and for establishing Rua da Judiaria as a corridor of Sephardic art and culture. It is also a tour operator licensed by Turismo de Portugal, offering walks through Jewish Lisbon, and is closed on Saturdays.
