Parque das Nações Interpretation Centre
In the Portugal Pavilion, models and videos tell how Expo '98 transformed the area; currently temporarily closed.
Parque das Nações Interpretation Centre – Portugal Pavilion
Housed in the north wing of the Portugal Pavilion, the Parque das Nações Interpretation Centre invites visitors to discover and reflect on the transformation of this area, which Expo '98 turned into Lisbon’s newest district and the country’s youngest parish. Its origins go back to 2015, when Parque Expo created the exhibition “A Cidade Imaginada” (The Imagined City), a retrospective of the architectural, urban and environmental intervention on a former site of heavy industry and rubbish tips, which drew 25,000 visitors in its first seven months. When the company was wound up, management passed to the Parque das Nações Parish Council in October 2016, but the space closed about a year later. It reopened to the public on 23 May 2025, the day after the official inauguration marking the 27th anniversary of Expo '98, as part of the Pavilion’s Exhibition Centre, a building now run by the University of Lisbon, which also houses the António Mega Ferreira Library. It displays scale models of the area, the original preliminary study for the Homem-Sol sculpture and historical videos of the site before and after the world exhibition. Admission is free, through the Cais Português entrance. At the time of writing, the Parish Council states that the Portugal Pavilion’s Exhibition Centre is temporarily closed.
