Codfish History Interpretation Centre – East Tower of Terreiro do Paço

Opened on 22 July 2020 in the East Tower of Terreiro do Paço, overlooking the Tagus, the Codfish History Interpretation Centre tells the story of the discovery of Newfoundland and the Portuguese adventure in icy seas in search of cod. Spread over two floors, the exhibition is modern and interactive, with images, films, animations and texts in Portuguese and English, and can be complemented by an audio-guide app. It is divided into two main sections. 'The Sea' follows the saga of the great cod fishery: the departure of thousands of fishermen for Newfoundland and Greenland, the blessing of the cod fleet used as propaganda by the Estado Novo regime, an immersive experience in a dory, the White Fleet, whose ships were painted white during the Second World War, and the hard life on board during campaigns of about six months. 'At the Table' presents cod as a symbol of the national cuisine, part of the Portuguese diet since the 15th century, and asks what the future holds for the species in the face of climate change. The Saga room also displays more than 40 objects lent by the Ílhavo Maritime Museum. The venue also has a grocery shop and a restaurant devoted to cod.
