Roque Gameiro House – Amadora Museum

In Amadora, the municipality bordering Lisbon, the Roque Gameiro House was commissioned in 1898 by the watercolourist Alfredo Roque Gameiro as a family home; the original design, corresponding to the main entrance floor and the tower, is commonly attributed to the painter himself. In 1900 the building was enlarged with two further floors to a design by Raul Lino, which gave it the exterior it still keeps today, while Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro was responsible for the decoration of the dining room and for building materials. A typical example of the 'Portuguese House' concept, inspired by the vernacular architecture of several regions of the country, it stands out for its small entrance porch, its roofs of Portuguese tiles and the prominence of stonework and azulejos. The family left the house in the mid-1920s; bought by Oeiras City Council in 1969, it passed ten years later to the newly created municipality of Amadora, which restored it. Listed as a monument of public interest and part of the Amadora Museum since 2023, it houses the permanent exhibition 'Alfredo Roque Gameiro, the house, the family and the work', as well as temporary exhibitions, guided tours, talks and concerts. Admission is free.
