Vieira da Silva House-Studio – Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation

On Alto de São Francisco, beside the Jardim das Amoreiras, number 1 was the home and workplace of the painter Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and her husband, the painter Arpad Szenes, before the couple's troubled departure for Brazil and their later settlement in Paris. Once established, the two artists regularly returned to Lisbon and to the small scale of this house. In her final years, the painter expressed the wish that her former house and studio should remain linked to artistic production and the study of contemporary art, and the house was bequeathed to the Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation, created during the artist's lifetime. After a thorough renovation and conservation of the building, the House-Studio opened to everyone as a complementary and autonomous service of the Foundation's museum, a few steps away on Praça das Amoreiras. Rather than a programme defined in-house, it offers a relationship built with the community, through courses and lectures, hosted projects and exhibitions, workshops and residencies for artists and researchers, while also supporting the museum's exhibitions and education service. Admission is free, and guided tours are booked through the Foundation.
