José Pedro House-Museum (museum unit)

In Sacavém, in the municipality of Loures and close to Lisbon's northern boundary, the José Pedro House-Museum is the city's second museum unit devoted to ceramics, after the Sacavém Ceramics Museum. Both preserve the memory of the Sacavém earthenware factory, founded between 1858 and 1859 by Manuel Joaquim Afonso, an industrialist in glass and ceramics, which, under a succession of English owners, made its name in Portuguese and international ceramics in the 20th century before being declared bankrupt in 1994. The house-museum opened in 2005 in the former home of the ceramist José da Silva Pedro, a one-time worker at the factory, and preserves the body of work the artist created over the last twenty years of his life, consisting mainly of small earthenware houses and figures. It is run by Loures City Council, like the Ceramics Museum, which is also in Sacavém, in the Real Forte development. Unlike the main museum, it opens only on Saturdays, with longer hours between April and September, so it is advisable to confirm a visit by telephone before planning it.
