Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum

On Avenida 5 de Outubro, the Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum displays the collection assembled by the physician and collector António Anastácio Gonçalves. The building was commissioned by the painter José Malhoa as his home and studio, to a 1904-1905 design by the architect Norte Júnior, and won the 1905 Valmor Prize. Anastácio Gonçalves bought it in 1932 and lived there while forming his collection; in 1969, at the collector's express wish, the house was bequeathed to the Portuguese State, opening to the public in 1980. In 1996 it was extended to a design by the architects Frederico and Pedro George, which added a reception, shop and temporary exhibition space, and it reopened in its present form in December 1997. The collection, of some 3,000 pieces, consists mainly of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Portuguese painting, Chinese porcelain and Portuguese and foreign furniture, together with silverware, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, coins, glass and pocket watches, as well as works and documents from the estate of Silva Porto. Part of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, the house-museum is always visited accompanied by staff, on tours of about 45 minutes for groups of up to ten people, with no booking needed; organised groups must book.
