Casa Ásia – Francisco Capelo Collection – Palácio de São Roque

Housed in the Palácio de São Roque, also known as the Palácio Portugal da Gama, on Largo Trindade Coelho, between Chiado and Bairro Alto, Casa Ásia – Francisco Capelo Collection opened to the public in 2024. The building, of seventeenth-century origin and consolidated in the eighteenth century, survived the 1755 earthquake and was acquired in 2014, already in a state of decay, by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, which restored it and kept the historic fado house Café Luso, on Travessa da Queimada. The collection, of some 1,300 objects, was assembled over two decades by the collector Francisco Capelo, who set off on a long journey through Asia in 1999 and wished to make the collection public in a “Casa Ásia” in Lisbon. The pieces, dating from the third century BC to the twentieth century and chosen for their rarity and artistic quality, come from fourteen countries, from India, Nepal and Sri Lanka to China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Timor-Leste and the Philippines. The permanent exhibition occupies two floors: on the first, Japan, China, Korea, India and Tibet; on the second, Sri Lanka and South-East Asia, from Vietnam and Cambodia to Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia. The collection complements the Church and Museum of São Roque, with which it shares a combined ticket, and offers guided tours and a regular programme.
