Casa da Achada
In Mouraria, the home of Mário Dionísio's legacy: paintings, a library, films and talks in a former workshop.
Casa da Achada – Mário Dionísio Centre
In Mouraria, near Praça da Figueira and the Castle, Casa da Achada is the home of the Mário Dionísio Centre, an association founded in September 2008 by more than fifty relatives, friends, former students and scholars of the work of the writer, painter and teacher, born in Lisbon in 1916 and who died in 1993. It opened to the public on 29 September 2009, with a week of activities, in a former metalworking shop of some 300 m²; the architect Raul Hestnes Ferreira, a founding member, designed a refurbishment project, but at first it was only possible to consolidate the building in the simplest and most economical way. In the public area visitors can see Mário Dionísio's paintings, some on permanent display and others stored so that they can be viewed on request, together with works by other artists that belonged to him, and there is an open-access library with a lending service. It hosts exhibitions, readings, film screenings, talks, courses and workshops, also in its tree-lined garden. The Documentation Centre holds the literary and artistic estates, the personal archive and the library of Mário Dionísio and Maria Letícia Clemente da Silva, with some 6,000 volumes and 300 periodical titles, which can be consulted by appointment.
