Casa da Liberdade
In Alfama, an art space honouring Mário Cesariny, with temporary exhibitions of contemporary art.
Casa da Liberdade – Mário Cesariny
The Casa da Liberdade – Mário Cesariny is a multipurpose art space with museum-like features, paying tribute to Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos, the founder of the Surrealist movement in Portugal. Founded in 2013, it stands in Alfama, on Rua das Escolas Gerais, and is one of the venues coordinated and artistically directed by the Colectivo Multimédia Perve, a non-profit cultural association founded in 1997 that promotes the concept of Global Art. Its programme is built on temporary exhibitions, often in partnership with Perve Galeria, presenting works by Cesariny and artists in his orbit, such as Cruzeiro Seixas and Fernando Lemos, as well as shows by artists from other regions, especially the Portuguese-speaking world. In 2026 the space hosted, among others, the group exhibition honouring Artur Bual on the centenary of his birth and the solo show by the Mozambican ceramist Reinata Sadimba, on view until 24 October. The Rede Portuguesa de Arte Contemporânea gives opening hours as Tuesday to Saturday, 14:00 to 20:00, but other listings also include Monday, so it is advisable to confirm the hours by telephone or on the Perve Galeria website before visiting.
