Lavra Funicular
Lisbon's oldest funicular (1884), from Anunciada to Forno do Torel; temporarily closed since September 2025.
Lavra Funicular (Ascensor do Lavra)
The Lavra Funicular links Largo da Anunciada to Travessa do Forno do Torel, on Calçada do Lavra, and is the oldest of Lisbon's funiculars: it opened on 19 April 1884. With a steep track, it climbs from the Santo António district, close to Avenida da Liberdade, to Travessa do Forno do Torel. It has been a National Monument since 2002 and Carris, the public transport company that operates it, describes it as an example of the historic charm of Lisbon. It is closed: Carris suspended the historic funiculars in September 2025 after the Glória funicular accident, and its page lists it as "Temporarily closed", with no reopening date. To ease travel while the suspension lasts, Carris has adjusted the route and stops of bus line 19B. According to the press, the company has not yet confirmed whether the equipment will be kept or replaced, so no visit is possible at present.
