Rua Augusta Triumphal Arch – viewpoint

The Rua Augusta Triumphal Arch opens the busiest pedestrian street in the Baixa onto Terreiro do Paço and symbolises the strength of Lisbon reborn after the 1755 earthquake, which consumed it through earth, fire and sea. Its Latin inscription honours the virtues of the forebears, that is, the strength, resilience and achievements of the Portuguese people. At the top, the sculptural group by Célestin Anatole Calmels shows Glory crowning Genius and Valour; further down, the statues by Victor Bastos depict, from left to right, the Marquis of Pombal, Vasco da Gama, Viriatus and Nuno Álvares Pereira, major figures of the nation's history. Since 9 August 2013 the top of the monument has been open to the public as a viewpoint, with a 360-degree view over the Pombaline Baixa and the River Tagus. Inside, the Clock Room houses an exhibition telling the story of the triumphal arch. Admission is charged, free for Lisboa Card holders, and the arch is open every day, with last entry half an hour before closing.
