Glória Funicular
From Restauradores to the Bairro Alto since 1885; wrecked in the accident of 3 September 2025, with new equipment planned by 2029.
Glória Funicular (Ascensor da Glória)
The Glória Funicular links Praça dos Restauradores to the Bairro Alto, next to the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint. It was the second funicular to open in Lisbon, on 24 October 1885, and has been a National Monument since 2002. On 3 September 2025 it suffered a serious accident, which caused deaths and injuries and left the equipment partly destroyed; Carris suspended the historic funiculars that day. Carris's page lists it as "Temporarily closed" and, while it remains closed, the company runs bus route 51E, linking Restauradores to Largo do Carmo as an alternative to the funicular. According to the press, Carris plans to replace the equipment with a new one by 2029, a date the company itself admits is subject to setbacks, and the public tender is expected to be launched by the end of the first quarter of 2027. No visit is therefore possible at present; the entry is kept for the funicular's historical importance.
