Bica Funicular
In the Bica district, the 1892 funicular between Rua de São Paulo and Calhariz; temporarily closed since September 2025.
Bica Funicular (Ascensor da Bica)
The Bica Funicular links Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz, along the steep Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo. It was the last of Lisbon's historic funiculars to open, on 28 June 1892. It is a two-car funicular whose carriages pass halfway along the route, and its cobbled track, with the River Tagus in the background, makes it one of the most photographed places in the city, in the Bica district, known for its colourful houses and nightlife. It has been classified as a National Monument since 2002. It is temporarily closed: Carris suspended the historic funiculars in September 2025 after the Glória funicular accident, and its page lists the funicular as "Temporarily closed", with no reopening date. While it is closed, Carris recommends bus route 22B, which links Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz. The street itself can still be climbed on foot.
