Pillar 7 Bridge Experience – 25 de Abril Bridge Interpretation Centre

The Pillar 7 Bridge Experience is the interpretation centre of the 25 de Abril Bridge, set inside pillar 7, beside Avenida da Índia in Alcântara. The bridge opened on 6 August 1966 as the Salazar Bridge and, after the 1974 Revolution, was renamed the 25 de Abril Bridge; its main span measures 1,012.88 metres, and the whole structure stretches for about 2.3 kilometres. The centre opened to the public in September 2017, in a pillar owned by Infraestruturas de Portugal and handed over for fifteen years to the Lisbon Region Tourism Board, which built and runs it. The visit combines displays on the history and construction of the bridge, a room with mirrored floor and ceiling and virtual-reality experiences, and ends at a viewpoint at the top of the pillar, level with the road deck, 72 metres above the ground, looking over the Tagus, Alcântara and Belém. Visitors normally go up in a panoramic lift, the equivalent of 26 floors; at the moment, however, the lift is under repair and the viewpoint can only be reached by the stairs, 372 steps, which is why tickets are reduced.
