Rua dos Correeiros Archaeological Site (NARC) – Fundação Millennium bcp
In Lisbon's Pombaline Baixa, beneath the block occupied by the Millennium bcp headquarters between Rua Augusta and Rua dos Correeiros, lies the Rua dos Correeiros Archaeological Site, known by its Portuguese acronym NARC. The remains came to light during renovation work on the bank's buildings, and the excavation took place between 1991 and 1995, the year the site opened. Classified as a National Monument in 2015, it was closed for works from 2019 until the end of 2021 and reopened with a new museography designed by Atelier Brückner. The underground route spans some 2,500 years of Lisbon's history: buildings of an Iron Age riverside quarter, the oldest Roman cemetery known in the city, the tanks of fish-processing factories and a bathhouse with a polychrome mosaic, traces of the Islamic suburb and the medieval city, streets and houses of the Baixa before 1755 and, finally, the marks of the earthquake and of the Pombaline rebuilding. Among the finds are Islamic ceramics, a jug imported from Saintonge and a panel of chequered tiles. The site is managed by the Fundação Millennium bcp and admission is free, but it can only be seen on guided tours, in Portuguese or English, from Monday to Saturday, booked in advance on the foundation's website.
