Lisbon Museum – Flour Mill of the former Manutenção Militar

In Beato, within the vast industrial complex of the former Manutenção Militar (Military Supply Depot), the Flour Mill is being turned into a new venue of the Lisbon Museum. It dates from 1897 and worked until 2005, representing the modernisation of the army's food industry at the dawn of the consumer society; the Lisbon Museum regards it as unique both in Portugal and internationally. Some one hundred machines, pipes and transmission systems survive across the building's several floors, in good condition and some ready to run. Between August 2022 and April 2024 this equipment underwent conservation and restoration, a pioneering project in Portugal carried out by a team specialising in industrial heritage, under the scientific coordination of a British expert: hundreds of kilos of cereal and flour residue still lodged inside the machines were first removed, restoring their colour, smells and movement. The venue is still under development and has no regular opening hours: it can only be visited on special occasions, mainly on ticketed guided tours announced in the Lisbon Museum's programme, which also hosts the talks and meetings of the “Encontros na Moagem” series at the mill.
