Combatants' Museum – Bom Sucesso Fort
The Combatants' Museum occupies the Bom Sucesso Fort, on the banks of the Tagus a few steps from the Belém Tower, and is run by the Liga dos Combatentes, the Portuguese veterans' league. The fort has more than two centuries of history, with small powder magazines built during its renovation in 1876; after a period of near-total abandonment between 1992 and 1999, the Army handed it over to the Liga dos Combatentes, and the museum opened its doors in 2003. Beside it stands the Monument to the Overseas Combatants, inaugurated by President Mário Soares on 15 January 1994, with sculpture by João Antero de Almeida; around it, the plaques placed from 1999 and unveiled in 2000 bear the names of the combatants who died overseas. Fort, museum and monument together form the Memorial Complex to the Portuguese Combatant. Inside, the trench built in 2014 for the centenary of the Great War began as a temporary exhibition, stayed for good and is now the museum's emblem. It is a place of remembrance and also for a stroll, with views over the river and the Belém Tower.
