Museum of the League of Combatants Headquarters
The Museum of the League of Combatants Headquarters is housed in the institution's seat in the Bairro Alto and is one of the League's cultural bodies. Its purpose is to collect, document, study, conserve, publicise and exhibit the historical and military testimonies in which Portuguese combatants took part, so as to preserve the collective national memory and the institution's own memory. The permanent exhibition focuses on patriotic values and the celebration of national achievements, with particular emphasis on the First World War (1914-1918) and the Overseas War (1961-1975). The visit also includes the rooms of the Headquarters Library, whose collection specialises in the First World War, the Overseas War and peace operations. The objects in the collections of the Headquarters Museum and of the Museu do Combatente, which is installed in the Forte do Bom Sucesso, can be browsed in the League's online museum collection, updated weekly. The League also offers travelling exhibitions of photography, painting and drawing on its history and on the two conflicts. Visits require prior authorisation, requested from the League by telephone or email, and the building has no access ramps for wheelchairs.
