MUDE
On Rua Augusta, the former Banco Nacional Ultramarino turned into Portugal's great design museum, reopened in 2024 with the Francisco Capelo Collection.
Design Museum
MUDE – the Design Museum occupies an entire block of Rua Augusta, in the heart of the Pombaline Baixa, and is today Portugal's leading museum devoted to every expression of design. The building was the headquarters of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino from 1866 and took on its present look through the works of the architects Tertuliano de Lacerda Marques, in the 1920s, and Cristino da Silva, between 1951 and 1972. The museum grew out of the Francisco Capelo Collection, acquired by Lisbon City Council in 2002, and opened here in 2009 after minimal works. In 2016 a complete renovation of the block began, giving the museum eight floors and more than 15,000 square metres; MUDE reopened to the public on 25 July 2024. The collection brings together some 20,000 pieces in 23 collections – from Francisco Capelo to Daciano da Costa and António Garcia – and the long-term exhibition, "What are things for?", traces design from 1900 to 2020, from fashion to furniture and everyday objects.
