Culturgest – Caixa Geral de Depósitos Foundation
Culturgest – Fundação Caixa Geral de Depósitos opened its doors in October 1993 in the headquarters of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos bank, near Campo Pequeno, and has since become one of the most influential centres of contemporary creation in the artistic life of the city and the country. A private foundation set up by the state-owned bank, which provides an annual endowment and its premises, it presents a regular programme of theatre, dance, music, visual arts, cinema and ideas, complemented by lectures, debates, workshops and performances for schools and families; it follows the careers of stage directors and choreographers, commissions works from visual artists and hosts some of Lisbon's largest film festivals. It has two auditoriums, the 616-seat Auditório Emílio Rui Vilar and a smaller one with 145 seats, as well as galleries for solo and group exhibitions. Since 2006 it has also been responsible for studying, managing, promoting and conserving the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Collection, begun in 1983, which brings together some 1,800 paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, videos, installations and prints, with particular attention to art made after the 1980s and, since the turn of the century, to contemporary work from Brazil, Mozambique, Angola and Cape Verde. The galleries are entered from the building on Rua Arco do Cego and close throughout August.
