Santa Catarina Viewpoint – Adamastor Garden

Known as the Adamastor viewpoint, Jardim do Alto de Santa Catarina opens over the Tagus and its southern bank, with the 25 de Abril Bridge defining the western horizon. Adamastor, the figure created by Camões in The Lusiads, dominates the garden through Júlio Vaz Júnior’s sculpture, inaugurated in 1927. The garden is a meeting place and a pause on routes between Bairro Alto, Bica and the waterfront. From the balustrade, the roofs of São Paulo fill the foreground as the view follows the estuary westwards. Visiting this outdoor public space is independent of the cafés and terraces around it.
