Hospital de Bonecas (Doll Hospital) – Praça da Figueira

On Praça da Figueira, the Hospital de Bonecas (Doll Hospital) has been in business since 1830. According to the story told by the house itself, it began with Dona Carlota, a lady who made rag dolls at the door of a small dried-herb shop beside a market and who, little by little, began mending the dolls that children brought her. The market disappeared, but the little shop lived on in the memory of several generations as a place where time passes more slowly. Today it is a shop and workshop where dolls are treated as 'patients', each with a medical record and a bed number, and where cuddly toys, toys, porcelain, paintings and sacred art are restored, clothes and regional and Carnival costumes are made, and dolls' house miniatures are sold. There is also a small museum holding more than 3,500 different kinds of doll, a number that grows almost daily through donations and fills the rooms with faces, costumes and expressions, making the visit unusual, if not always comfortable. Part of the city's Lojas com História (Historic Shops) programme, it welcomes children and adults alike, many of them hoping to recover childhood memories. The museum can be visited from Monday to Saturday, with a ticket.
