Santa Justa Lift (Carmo Lift)
The Santa Justa Lift, also known as the Carmo Lift, links Rua do Ouro, in the Baixa, to Largo do Carmo. It opened on 10 July 1902 and was designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. It was originally steam-powered; in November 1907 it was fitted with electric motors. It is a vertical lift in a neo-Gothic structure entirely unlike the city's other funiculars, with wooden cabins decorated in brass. At the top of the tower there is a viewpoint overlooking the Baixa, São Jorge Castle, the River Tagus and the ruins of the Carmo Convent, which was visited with its own ticket and a limit of twenty people at a time. The lift has been a National Monument since 2002. It is temporarily closed, like the other historic lifts of Lisbon, which Carris suspended in September 2025 after the Glória funicular accident. Carris's page still shows "Temporarily closed" and no reopening date has been announced. The status of the viewpoint should be checked before travelling.
