Edifício dos Leões
Ventura Terra’s architecture, banking history and Portuguese painting inside the historic building on Rua Áurea.
Edifício dos Leões – Santander Cultural Space
On Rua Áurea, the Edifício dos Leões opens part of Santander’s historic banking headquarters and art collection to visitors. The building has Pombaline origins and was remodelled in 1905 by Miguel Ventura Terra as the headquarters of Banco Lisboa & Açores. Sculpted lions by Jorge Pereira on its façade gave it its familiar name. Inside, the entrance hall and glazed metal dome reveal the architectural ambitions of early twentieth-century banking buildings. The visit combines these spaces with displays recalling banking activity and a selection of Portuguese paintings from the bank’s collection. It offers access to a Baixa building that retains an institutional role while also hosting a cultural programme. Admission requires a ticket; guided visits depend on the availability announced by the foundation.
