Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park – National Costume Museum
In Lumiar, beside the Angeja-Palmela Palace, a former country retreat on the outskirts of Lisbon, the Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park is the garden attached to the National Costume Museum, with which it shares its entrance on Largo Júlio de Castilho. It was created in the 18th century to a design by the Italian naturalist Domenico Vandelli and now covers some 11 hectares of lakes, meadows, secluded corners and paths. The walk crosses several distinct settings: the historic garden beside the palace, the botanical nursery, an orchard, the kitchen garden and the woodland. Among its notable trees is the first Araucaria heterophylla known in mainland Portugal. The museum housed in the palace, opened in 1977, holds some 40,000 items of dress and accessories from the 18th century to the present day, but it is temporarily closed to the public; the park remains open at the usual times, with its own ticket. Museum and park now belong to Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, and the garden opens from Tuesday to Sunday, with a lunchtime break.
