Palácio Anjos – Contemporary Art Centre (Algés, Oeiras)

In Algés, in the municipality of Oeiras, just beyond Lisbon's western boundary, the Palácio Anjos, also known as the Chalet Miramar, was built in 1875-1876 by Polycarpo Pecquet Ferreira dos Anjos, a Lisbon merchant and capitalist who assembled the "Miramar" estate there and turned it into a country retreat for his family. It was the first house in what is now the municipality of Oeiras to be built from scratch as a summer residence. In the 1980s Oeiras Council acquired the palace and the adjoining grounds, restored the complex and adapted it to new uses, with a library, an exhibition hall and a garden. In 2005-2006 the building underwent major works to house the Manuel de Brito Art Centre, which until 2018 staged a wide-ranging programme of modern and contemporary art exhibitions drawn from its collection, alongside recreational and educational activities. Since 2019, as the Palácio Anjos – Contemporary Art Centre, it has kept its mission of bringing the public closer to modern and contemporary art, with temporary exhibitions across a range of visual media, moments of reflection and debate on cultural creation, and an education service that takes bookings from schools and groups.
