Angeja-Palmela Palace

The National Costume Museum is housed in the Angeja-Palmela Palace, on a former country estate in Lumiar, and is the Portuguese museum devoted to the history of dress and fashion. It opened in 1977, following the exhibition O Traje Civil em Portugal, held in 1974 at the National Museum of Ancient Art. The collection brings together some forty thousand items of clothing and accessories, from the 18th century to the present day; the original core came from the National Coach Museum, with pieces that largely belonged to the Royal Household, and more than ninety per cent of the collection has since arrived through donations. The palace is surrounded by the Monteiro-Mor Botanical Park, created in the 18th century to a design by the Italian naturalist Domenico Vandelli: some eleven hectares of historic gardens, ponds and woodland, home to the first known Araucaria heterophylla in mainland Portugal. The museum is currently closed to the public, but the park remains open and is one of the quietest and most surprising gardens in Lisbon.
