Campo Pequeno Museum – Campo Pequeno Bullring
Housed in the Campo Pequeno Bullring, the Campo Pequeno Museum is devoted to the world of bullfighting in Portugal, with particular attention to the history of the building itself. The neo-Moorish bullring was officially inaugurated in 1892, to a design by the architect António José Dias da Silva, and is listed as a property of public interest. Between 1999 and 2006 it underwent a thorough remodelling that turned it into a multi-purpose complex, reopened to the public in May 2006 with a concert hall, shopping centre, cinemas, restaurants, underground car park and a museum, while keeping its bullfighting activity. The museum sets out to create a space of memory for Portuguese bullfighting, a practice the State has classified as part of the heritage of popular culture, and for the creation and historical evolution of Campo Pequeno, recalling the cultural and social events that have marked more than a century in the life of the building. It also aims to make bullfighting culture known to the general public and to promote Campo Pequeno as a venue for culture and leisure. Opening hours are not published and the museum is not presented on Campo Pequeno's current website, so it is advisable to confirm access with the secretariat before visiting.
