Sacavém Ceramics Museum and Manuel Joaquim Afonso Documentation Centre
In Sacavém, in the municipality of Loures, on the north-eastern edge of Lisbon, the Sacavém Ceramics Museum opened in July 2000 to promote, safeguard and share the legacy of the Sacavém pottery factory (Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém) and its links to the industrialisation of the area. Part of the Loures Museums Network, it occupies a purpose-built building that incorporates Kiln 18, the last physical trace of the factory and a magnificent example of the bottle kilns that shaped the landscape of the English Industrial Revolution. The museum's narrative champions industrial heritage and the importance of people in local history. It has two exhibition spaces, an auditorium and the Manuel Joaquim Afonso Documentation Centre, which holds the Loures Factories Archive, a unique record of the municipality's industrial heritage: besides the Sacavém pottery factory, it includes collections from the Abelheira paper mill, Olaio furniture, the Fábrica Nacional de Margarina and the Companhia Portuguesa de Trefilaria. The centre also has a specialist library on the arts, ceramics, industry, economic and social history and museology, for consultation on site. The exhibitions closed temporarily to the public at the end of September 2024 with a farewell event called “Até já” (“See you soon”), and Loures City Council states that the museum remains temporarily closed, with no reopening date announced.
