Beer Museum – Terreiro do Paço, East Wing

In the east wing of the Terreiro do Paço, the Beer Museum opened on 10 June 2012 at the initiative of the O Valor do Tempo group, and combines in one space a restaurant serving Portuguese and Lusophone cuisine, with a terrace facing the Tagus, and an exhibition devoted to the history of one of the oldest drinks in the world. The interactive, sensory route begins in the monasteries of Europe, where monks brewed beer to see them through periods of fasting, follows the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution and ends with a tasting, chosen from more than a hundred Portuguese craft beers. The visit can be made with an audio guide or with a guide, the latter including a tasting of three beers, and is free for under-18s and for restaurant customers. The restaurant walls feature the work of Júlio Pomar, who also designed the house's exclusive glass, an inverted half-bottle encased in glass that keeps the beer cool, available with the flag of any country. It is a commercial venue in which the museum element complements the restaurant, but it offers an accessible introduction to beer culture in one of the most emblematic spots of Pombaline Baixa.
