Lisboa Story Centre – Memories of the City – Terreiro do Paço
Housed in the eastern tower of the Terreiro do Paço, the Lisboa Story Centre – Memories of the City opened on 11 September 2012 as an interpretation centre devoted to the history of Lisbon, from its foundation to the present day. An interactive, technology-based venue, it offers a journey through time of about an hour, led by an audio guide, using stage sets, multimedia and sensory experiences to present dramatic accounts of the city's main episodes while respecting historical accuracy. On the ground floor the route unfolds in 17 chapters: it begins with the peoples and cultures that shaped the Iberian Peninsula, moves on to sixteenth-century Lisbon, with the goods and routes of the great voyages, and to the splendour of the eighteenth century under King João V, before reaching the room that recalls the earthquake of 1 November 1755, presented as an immersive experience. Then comes the modernising vision of the Marquis of Pombal and the rebuilding of the city, ending with a look at contemporary Lisbon and the political and social events of the Praça do Comércio. On the first floor, an interactive model of the city centre places events where they happened, and the Room of the Future shows visionary projects that never left the drawing board, such as tunnels, bridges and proposals to link the two banks of the Tagus. Admission is free with the Lisboa Card.
