Estrela Garden (Guerra Junqueiro Garden)
The Estrela Garden, later renamed Guerra Junqueiro Garden, is a public garden in the parish of Estrela, with one of its entrances opposite the Estrela Basilica. It was built between 1842 and 1852 and inaugurated on 3 April 1852. It was laid out in the style of English gardens, with a Romantic inspiration, and covers 4.6 hectares. One of its central features is the wrought-iron bandstand, built in 1884, which originally stood in the Passeio Público, before the opening of Avenida da Liberdade, and was moved to the garden in 1936. The garden also has ponds with ducks, swans, geese and carp, playgrounds, a café and flowerbeds, and species such as jacarandas, dragon trees and araucarias stand out. It was one of Queen Maria II's favourite places to take the royal children and is today one of the most popular spaces in the city in the late afternoon and at weekends, with varied programming in several months of the year. It is a public space with free access, open every day from 07:00 to midnight.
