Anjos Church
On Avenida Almirante Reis, a neoclassical church by José Luís Monteiro (1907-1911), with gilded woodwork and about a hundred paintings.
Parish Church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos
On Avenida Almirante Reis, beside the António Feijó garden, the Anjos Church stands where a seventeenth-century single-nave church, rich in gilded woodwork and paintings, had existed since 1563; it was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in 1758. With the opening of what was then Avenida Rainha D. Amélia, the church was demolished in the early twentieth century and replaced by another, designed by the architect José Luís Monteiro in the neoclassical style, which reused the paintings and gilded woodwork of the old furnishings. Construction began in 1907 and ended in 1911, the inauguration having taken place a year earlier. The façade, in white and pink marble, has three doors flanked by Doric columns and a triangular pediment with an oculus. Inside, six side altars, painted coffers in the nave ceiling and a chancel ceiling entirely covered in gilded woodwork frame some one hundred paintings alluding to the Eucharist, the Apocalypse and the New Testament. Notable are the image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, from the second half of the sixteenth century, and, in the sacristy, a sixteenth-century painting of Saint Anthony. It has been a Property of Public Interest since 1996 and is open for worship and visits during the parish hours.
