Galeria Santa Maria Maior – Santa Maria Maior Parish Council

On Rua da Madalena, a few steps from the headquarters of the Santa Maria Maior Parish Council, is the exhibition gallery the council runs in the heart of Lisbon's historic centre, in the old Madalena quarter. With no permanent display, the gallery lives on a regular programme of temporary exhibitions of visual arts, illustration and photography, both solo and group shows, all with free admission. One example is the annual exhibition of former students and teachers of the António Arroio School of Decorative Arts, which reached its twelfth edition in 2019. The gallery also takes part in city-wide programmes: in autumn 2026 it is showing "Novas Cartografias", a group exhibition within EMOP – Rethinking Photography that brings together six artists whose experimental practices stretch the very definition of photography, on view until 7 November. Past exhibitions are documented in albums on the council's website, and the council also runs the Acervo Santa Maria Maior on Rua Serpa Pinto, in Chiado, with the same opening hours. The space is open from Monday to Saturday, in the afternoon.
