Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Chapel of the Holy Spirit)

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios stands in Alfama, between Rua dos Remédios and Beco do Espírito Santo. In 1517, the local fishermen, gathered in the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit and of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, had a chapel built, to which a hospital was added in 1551. In 1651-1652 the confraternity, formed by the union with the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, had a church of its own built; the dedication comes from an image of the Virgin found in a well at the entrance, whose waters were said to be miraculous. The earthquake of 1755 caused serious damage and the reconstruction was completed in 1757. The facade has a Manueline portal with a polylobed arch, bearing the dove of the Holy Spirit on its coat of arms. The single-nave interior has blue-and-white figurative azulejo panels, depicting the Annunciation and scenes from the life of Saint Cecilia, and a ceiling painted with the Holy Spirit. Above the church is the Casa do Despacho, an unusually placed council room with secular-themed azulejos and a coffered ceiling. The portal has been a National Monument since 1910 and the whole is a Property of Public Interest since 1936. Visits are by appointment.
