Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara – Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa

The Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara stands in the Bairro Alto and belongs to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. It was founded in the 17th century by the 1st Marquis of Marialva who, according to e-cultura, made a vow in 1665, at the Battle of Montes Claros, to found a convent. It was occupied by the Order of St Francis and, later, by the Recolhimento das Órfãs of the Congregation of the Presentation of Mary. It was almost entirely destroyed in 1755 and reconstruction began in 1783. The church, predominantly Baroque, combines gilded woodwork and monochrome 18th-century tiles, and the ceiling frescoes and an original canvas of the Coronation of Our Lady by the Holy Trinity stand out. The complex also includes the Lencastres Chapel, the cloister and the Avocado Tree courtyard. According to the information from the Santa Casa published on e-cultura, the church and chapel can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with free entry, and the convent is closed on Mondays. The other rooms, such as the former refectory and the terrace, are used mainly for events, so it is advisable to confirm the current hours with the Santa Casa.
