Malaposta Cultural Centre
In Odivelas, on the Lisbon boundary, an 1873 slaughterhouse turned in 1989 into a home for theatre, dance, music and cinema.
Malaposta Cultural Centre – former Olivais Municipal Slaughterhouse
In Olival Basto, in the municipality of Odivelas and right on the Lisbon boundary, the Malaposta Cultural Centre occupies a building commissioned in 1873 by the Olivais Municipal Council as a municipal slaughterhouse. The site chosen was one of the most traditional entrances to the capital, the Quinta do Senhor Roubado or do Painel das Almas, near the Padrão do Senhor Roubado. The slaughterhouse operated until the 1960s, when it was decommissioned and abandoned. After rehabilitation and conversion works designed by the architects Cristina Szilard Hartmann and Richard Hartmann, who kept the U-shaped plan and added a stage house, it reopened on 2 December 1989 as AMASCULTURA, a centre for theatre production and training, with the play 'O Render dos Heróis' by José Cardoso Pires. For years its present name led people to associate the building, wrongly, with the old mail-coach stations. Owned by the municipality, it hosts theatre, dance, concerts, poetry, cinema, exhibitions and debates in the Sala Ruy de Carvalho, the experimental studio and the café-theatre; the autumn 2026 programme is mainly comedy and children's theatre. As a performance venue, access is with a ticket for each show.
