Fernando Pessoa House

The Fernando Pessoa House occupies the Campo de Ourique building where the poet spent the last fifteen years of his life. In 1920, Fernando Pessoa moved with his family into the first-floor right-hand flat at no. 16 Rua Coelho da Rocha, and lived here until a few days before his death on 30 November 1935. The House opened on 30 November 1993, on the anniversary of the poet's death, in a building rebuilt to a design by Daniela Ermano, who kept the façade, the stairs and two rooms of the old flat. Since it opened it has had an auditorium, a library and a reconstruction of the writer's bedroom, but the heart of the House is Fernando Pessoa's Private Library, with the books that belonged to him, classified as a National Treasure. Between 2019 and 2020 it underwent a major renovation, designed by José Adrião Arquitectos and curated by Paulo Pires do Vale, and reopened in August 2020 with a new exhibition route devoted to the poet and his heteronyms. In 2021 the Portuguese Museology Association named it the best Portuguese museum. Run by EGEAC, it also has a library open to the public from Tuesday to Friday and guided tours at weekends.
