Carpintarias de São Lázaro
In a 1920s industrial carpentry workshop, a contemporary arts centre with exhibitions, music and a terrace.
Carpintarias de São Lázaro – Cultural Centre
On Rua de São Lázaro, the Carpintarias occupy the former Carpintaria de São Lázaro, an industrial building from 1920s Lisbon now converted into a cultural centre devoted to contemporary creation. The Associação Cultural e Recreativa das Carpintarias de São Lázaro, a private non-profit association created in 2014, won the international public tender launched by Lisbon City Council for the concession of the building, granted for 30 years, and took responsibility for the adaptation works and for running the centre. Its doors first opened in 2017, with two visual-arts exhibitions forming part of Lisbon 2017, Ibero-American Capital of Culture; after a first phase of works in 2018, it reopened for good in January 2019. The main space, of some 500 m², with a seven-metre ceiling and large windows with square panes, hosts visual arts, music, theatre, dance and performance; a second floor of 300 m² is used for rehearsals, artist residencies and educational activities, and the terrace, overlooking Mouraria, Penha de França and the hills of Graça and the Castle, has housed the Miradouro de Baixo, a leisure space and terrace café, since 2021. The exhibitions can be visited from Thursday to Sunday, and performances follow the programme.
