Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Our Lady of Health) – Mouraria
At the entrance to Mouraria, beside Martim Moniz, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde began in 1505 as a hermitage of Saint Sebastian, built by the artillerymen of the Lisbon garrison in fulfilment of a vow, at a time when plague claimed thousands of victims and the saint was invoked against the disease. In 1662, when the brotherhoods of Saint Sebastian and of Our Lady of Health merged and the image of the Virgin was brought here, the church took its present dedication. The Baroque south-facing façade has Tuscan pilasters, a doorway with a broken curved pediment and a large window crowned by the royal coat of arms, and the bell tower ends in a bulbous finial. Inside the single nave, 18th-century blue-and-white tile dados with biblical figures, attributed to António de Oliveira Bernardes, surround the side altars and pulpits; the chancel, lined with late 18th-century gilded woodwork, holds the image of Our Lady of Health in an oval altarpiece by Brás de Almeida, with Solomonic columns. Listed as a Property of Public Interest in 1996, it is the starting point each year, in early May, of the Procession of Our Lady of Health, first held in 1570 and one of the oldest in the city. It is open for worship, with no published visiting hours.
