Júlio Pomar Studio Museum
The former warehouse Siza Vieira turned into a studio and museum devoted to the work of Júlio Pomar.
Júlio Pomar Studio Museum
Opened in 2013, the Júlio Pomar Studio Museum occupies a former warehouse in Rua do Vale, bought in 2000 by Lisbon City Council to become the studio of the painter, who spent the last years of his life in the same street. The conversion, designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, winner of the 1992 Pritzker Prize, took several years, and in 2010 the artist gave up using it as a studio, which made it possible to bring forward its opening as a museum; its name keeps the memory of that founding purpose. With clean lines and fitting discreetly into the neighbourhood, the two-storey building has a central exhibition space and an outdoor courtyard through which visitors enter. The collection comprises several hundred works donated by the artist to the Júlio Pomar Foundation and deposited there, or acquired by the museum – painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, collage and assemblage – tracing a path from neo-realism to the full embrace of modernity, alongside a large documentary archive. As it cannot all be shown at once, it is presented in rotating exhibitions, which also host artists of other generations, Portuguese and foreign, in dialogue with the work of Pomar (Lisbon, 1926–2018). Since 2015 the museum has been part of EGEAC's network of cultural venues.
