Lisbon Municipal Archive – General and Historical Archive, Bairro da Liberdade
The General and Historical Archive is the main seat of the Lisbon Municipal Archive, located in the Bairro da Liberdade, in Campolide. After the closure of the Alto da Eira archive in 2002 for public health reasons, the documents moved in 2004 to this building, which was remodelled and adapted to house the historical archive and the general archive, above all documents of an urban-planning nature. The premises were inaugurated that year and include a reading room, a library, a digitisation office, a restoration workshop and communication and design services. About 20,000 linear metres of documents are kept here, out of some 36,250 linear metres across the whole Municipal Archive. Research and consultation are preferably carried out through the website, and in-person consultation is scheduled according to the availability of the reading room. Service and the reading room are open Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 17:00, and closed at weekends and on public holidays. The Municipal Archive's exhibition room is at the Arquivo Fotográfico, on Rua da Palma, not at this site. It is therefore a research venue rather than one for casual visits.
