Military Historical Archive – Army Cultural Centre
The Military Historical Archive was created on 25 May 2011 with the mission of keeping, processing and preserving documents of historical value relating to the Army. Its origins go back to the archive of the Council of War, established on 11 December 1640 and believed to be the first Portuguese military archive; in 1736, with the creation of the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs and War, military matters passed to that secretariat, giving rise to a new archive. The present premises, inaugurated in 2018 by the Minister of National Defence, stand in the Army Cultural Centre, in Largo do Outeirinho da Amendoeira, and were designed for the preservation of documents: the building is climate-controlled, has modern furniture and greater security, with room for 15 kilometres of documentation, about ten of which were already filled. The archive also maintains the GERMIL portal, with digitised registers of service records, useful for genealogical research. It is not a museum but a research archive, open to researchers in its reading room from Monday to Friday. Please confirm the hours and access conditions by telephone or e-mail before going.
